What Do We Do?
We celebrate the Jewish holidays with creative observances which cover the full sweep of Jewish history. Each year opens with our Rosh Hashana, Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur assemblies which are open to the public. The makhzor we use for these assemblies was originally compiled and edited by our beloved longtime school principal and Kinder Theatre director Moishe Haar z”l.
Our makhzor contains readings, poetry and songs in English, Yiddish and Hebrew!
In addition to our High Holy Day assemblies, each month throughout the year we hold programs with speakers, panel discussions, presentations, and activities on varied topics of Jewish, Yiddish, and cultural interest.
The aim of the Sholem Aleichem Institute has always been to perpetuate the use of the Yiddish language and love of Yiddishkayt. (Yiddish culture) To this end, we include Yiddish in our programs along with English and Hebrew.

But I Don't Speak Yiddish!
That's okay! We have programs for learners of all ages and we love to introduce people to the vibrant language, literature, music, and art of Yiddish.
What Does "Without Walls" Mean?
Glad you asked! The term "without walls" has twofold meaning for us: first, it means that brick and mortar just isn't that exciting to us and we would rather use our funding for our programming and activities that are of interest to our membership.
Second, it means that our community is open to anyone - no matter their gender identity, sexuality, race/ethnicity, or Jewish background. Our organization is meant to be a home for yiddishkayt in whatever form that takes.
Our membership dues are modest and when you consider the value and long tradition of quality programming we provide our members, joining becomes an easy choice.

During our 97-year history SAI has continually brought our members and the community meaningful programs which perpetuate our rich Jewish cultural heritage. We are a vital group who welcomes new members with open arms! Join us today!
